Signs and Symptoms of Chronic Neck & Back Conditions

Patients seeking relief from neck and back pain are among the most frequent complaints heard in doctor's offices across the nation. Each year, millions of workdays are lost to adults suffering with work limitations from persistent or chronic spinal pain. Listed below are common conditions that we diagnose and treat at the MedWell Spine & Neuropathy Treatment Center in Bergen County:

  • Muscle Spasms - Overuse, poor posture, stress and injuries, such as sprains and strains are common causes of hard, tight muscles that can occur from the base of the skull to lower back causing painful sensations including headaches, shooting pains or a dull ache. Although spasms can be debilitating, they are treatable as an acute or recurring condition.
  • Bulging Disc - This is a common spine injury sustained to the intervertebral disc, where a small bulge of disc material distends into the spinal canal. Unlike a herniated disc, there is no rupture inside the disc's outer layer. Nonetheless, bulging disc can be a source of chronic neck or back pain.
  • Chronic Back Pain - Back pain that persists for twelve weeks or more after the initial injury or underlying cause was treated is considered chronic. About one in five people diagnosed with acute back pain will develop chronic symptoms within a year.
  • Chronic Neck Pain - The bones, ligaments and muscles of your neck support your head, so when your neck hurts, you know it. Neck pain can be as simple as a muscle strain or as serious as spinal stenosis with symptoms that cause pain, numbness or tingling that radiate into your shoulder or down your arms.
  • Pinched Nerves - Radiculopathy is any set of conditions where one or more nerves are pinched leading to radicular pain and neuropathy with weakness, numbness or difficulty in controlling the affected muscles in the arms, chest, lower back or legs.
  • Sciatica - The sciatic nerve is a large nerve that runs from the lower back down the back of each leg. When something injures or puts pressure on the sciatic nerve, it can cause debilitating lower back pain that spreads to the hips, buttocks and legs.
  • Neuropathy - The onset of peripheral neuropathy includes numbness, prickling or tingling in the hands or feet that can spread upward into the arms or legs causing throbbing or burning pain. Among the numerous causes are diabetes, post-chemotherapy, hereditary disorders, autoimmune diseases, exposure to toxic chemicals, poor nutrition, chronic alcoholism and certain medications.
  • Disc Herniation - Often referred to as a "slipped disc", a disc that becomes herniated is typically an early sign of degenerative disc disease. If the nucleus of the spinal disc is pushed through a rupture or tear into the spinal canal, the herniation can compress or pinch a nerve.
  • Osteoarthritis - This is the most common form of arthritis that occurs when the protective cartilage that cushions the ends of your bones wears down over time. An ongoing bone-on-bone grind can produce painful inflammation and damage joints in the neck, back, hands, knees, hips and spine.
  • Facet Syndrome - Facet joints are formed by back or neck bones on either side of the cervical, thoracic or lumbar disc to make up each intervertebral segment. When the cartilage inside deteriorates, the joint becomes inflamed triggering pain signals in nearby nerve endings. Facet joint syndrome can cause both radiating pain and neurological dysfunction.
  • Spinal Stenosis - A narrowing of the spinal openings occurs when the protective cartilage wears down and the spinal cord becomes compressed. The pressure placed on root nerves can cause crippling muscle weakness, radiating numbness, pins-and-needles feelings or even paralysis.
  • Degenerative Disc Disease - This isn't a true disease but a condition of the spinal discs (drying out) between vertebrae where a loss of cushioning, fragmentation and herniation can result in nagging to disabling pain.
  • Spondylolisthesis - Risk factors for this painful disease include sports and work environments that cause the vertebrae to slip forward onto the bone directly below it. Timely treatment is important as the condition can worsen over time.

Men and women with chronic pain often report significantly higher levels of psychological distress, including feelings of anger, worthlessness, hopelessness and depression, while those who suffered an acute episode of neck or back pain are less likely to complain of downhearted feelings. Moreover, limitations related to social, recreational and family activities are more than three times that of adults, who are not suffering with chronic pain.

Benefits of MedWell's Brain Based Therapy

What makes Medwell unique is our thorough diagnostic approach to identifying what is causing your pain and applying treatment protocols to provide the best possible outcomes. Our team of doctors, surgeons, nurse practitioners and technicians focus on how your bones, joints, muscles, nerves and discs have been affected by the disease process, trauma, hereditary factors, injuries and natural aging. Using a DTS spinal decompression system, we allow you to relax while the decompression table stretches and decompresses structures to restore some of the original disc height that has been lost. Many times this treatment alone provides the pain relief that a patient is seeking. With a proper clinical evaluation, we can deliver the right treatments at the right time to ensure you get your life back and continue doing the things that you love to do.

Chronic pain conditions exist because of a "Cause", which typically involves multiple systems of the body. By applying functional neurology, our staff can understand the neurological responses and identify specific areas of concern to determine the exact cause of your problems. Oxygen is extremely important to brain function; however, the brain does not store oxygen as muscles do. Therefore, the solution is to provide ample oxygen for the cerebellum to function properly. If your cerebellum has sufficient oxygen, your body can begin healing the conditions that are causing your chronic neck and back pain. This way you get your life back and can start doing all the things that you love to do. Finally, we add "Activities of Daily Living Therapy", so the problem gets completely fixed and you do not have to keep coming back repeatedly.
